RE: Case study - how to get a free RV

Hi folks, this is a case study from one of our RV Lifestyle team members Josh Whitford that wanted to test out how much could be made renting out an RV.

So without further adieu, I'll let him talk about his experience.

Hello, I know that is a salacious headline and I want to be clear that nobody gave me a free RV and I did in fact have to put up some of my own cash.

With that said, I can definitely tell you that I don't have to make a single RV payment out of my own pocket for the next 9 months or so. And that's if I stopped renting now… more on that in a second.

This summer I set out to purchase an RV with the intent of renting it out on those popular sites you see around.

I also wanted an RV for myself, wife and dog to be able to use and enjoy.

So we hopped on down to the local RV dealer in Bozeman, MT to make a selection of something practical for us and for others to potentially use. (Psst don't tell anyone -- We bagged a BOGO!)

We decided to purchase a brand new 2020 Winnebago Travato 59G (and got another for "Eval").
Here's the brief window sticker:
  • Sticker Price: $89,000
  • Down Payment: $10,000
  • Terms: 20 yr fixed
  • Rate: 4.99%
  • Monthly Payment: $575
Knowing that we planned to rent it out at least for a little bit we figured we'd be able to cover the cost of the unit and be able to use it when we wanted.

Not only did we do that, and some... but in just 35 days of renting (over a 60 day period) we banked $7,940.00.

That covers 9 complete months of RV payments and RV Insurance (we pay an average of $271/ month for insurance).

Now that money is sitting in a bank account where we have auto-pay set up and I don't have to pay anything else out of pocket for our RV until next summer (the way things are going I may not have to pay anything out of my pocket).

This was quite a shock for us that with a little bit of management and being flexible we were able to basically and essentially get an RV paid for and if we rent it out for just over a month each year - it will continue paying for itself as long as we have it.

Throughout this experience, we've learned a lot, made a few mistakes, and did a heck of a lot of research because we couldn't find the right info we wanted online. 

Some of the things we figured out include:
  • What kind of insurance you really need to be protected while renting 
  • How to build a smooth process for our renter communication, check-ins, and check-outs
  • How to get the rental
  • How to vet out potential renters (finding good, cautious renters instead of potentially bad and reckless ones)  
  • How to decrease the amount of effort we had to put into each rental but improve our overall revenue
  • And so much more!
There was so much we didn't know going into this that we now know and wished we had known.

A lot of times, it felt like we were making it up as we went and we wished there was an easier way to get started and avoid the frustrating issues that we now know to avoid.
